Land Allotted for Building Kalam’s MEMORIAL

To the much relief of the admirers and relatives of former President APJ Abdul Kalam, Tamil Nadu government has today said that the land for building him a memorial has been allotted and the Central Public Works Department has taken steps to fence it.

The statement comes after reports citing the negligence in maintain Kalam’s burial place came up in the media. Civil society members had also launched an online petition campaign to harness the public support for speedy construction earlier.

Chief Minister Jayalalitha has issued orders allotting 1.36 acres belonging to the state government and transferring the same to the Central government for building the memorial. It is based on a letter sent by Union Urban Development Secretary.

On October 15th, the birth anniversary of Dr. Kalam, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced that a memorial would be built for the late President. He had also requested Tamil Nadu Government to allocate land for the purpose. PM Modi, Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi and a mass of other leaders attended Dr. Kalam’s funeral in his hometown Pei Karumbu in Rameswaram to pay their last respects

A high-level committee has been formed to monitor the construction work and during its first meeting held on November 6th..
