BUS TRAGEDY KILLS 10 IN ASSAM
Around 10 people were killed and 20 injured when a bus from Assam fell into a gorge in Meghalaya. The bus was on its way to Assam’s remotre district of Hailakandi. Authorities are apprehensive of the number of deaths with some bodies yet to be recovered.
The accident happened at Tongseng in East Jaintia Hills district, about 150 km east of Shillong early morning and those got killed include women and children. According to the police, the gorge is about 100 meters deep and the bus is owned by a company called Capital Travels.
“10 dead bodies have been brought out. We fear there might be more. The area is remote. The critically injured have been rushed to Silchar Medical College in Assam and the other injured are being treated in the local hospital in Khliehriat,” a senior police officer in Meghalaya informed.
There have been a number of accidents on the route and several people have lost their lives over the last 20 years, as lots of people take the 450 kilometer journey from Guwahati to Hailakandi, which passes through arduous terrain, overnight.
