Militants have today morning unleashed an attack on the Indian Air Force base in Pathankot, Punjab. According to sources, two of the gunmen in the group have been killed in a shootout with security forces, while others were holed up in buildings on the base.

The attack bears a clear resemblance to the raid happened last year, when three militants attacked a police station in Diana Nagar. They were shot down by the security forces after a battle of 12 hours. What makes the whole event look odd is, the assault comes days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s surprise visit to Pakistan to greet his counterpart Nawas Sharif for the latter’s birthday.

The attack comes in heels with the abduction of an SP and two others by five suspected militants, who thrashed them before dumping them from the vehicle. After the incident security was beefed up in the border areas of Pathankot and Gurdaspur district. A statewide alert has been issued by the Punjab Police and the Army’s units and police in Jammu were also monitoring the situation.
