Movie buffs in India can now jump on ecstacy….. finally, netflix , an on-demand internet  streaming media, has announced that it is now available in India. At the Consumer Electronics show in Las Vegas, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings announced that its service will now be available in around 190 countries including India.Access fee for one month is free.

In India the Netflix plan is starting with a basic plan of Rs 500 per month ranging upto Rs 800 for a premium service. Basic plan allows access on 1 SD screen. The standard plan of Rs650 allows HD access on 2 screens at a time while the premium plan allows Ultra HD access on $ screens simultaneously at a time. The best part  In these times of ‘Sanskaari Censor board’ is Netflix is coming out with uncensored content.

Netflix is a cross- platform video streaming application. It can be accessed on an iPhone, iPad, Android smartphone the web browser on a PC, Smart TV platforms, Apple TV box, Sony PlayStation , Windows platforms etc.

Netflix is offering a wide range of content to the Indian viwers. First is the usual content they offer in US and other countries. This includes a huge library of Hollywood mobvies and popular series like Narcos, Orange is the new black, Daredevil. The second part is purely localized for the Indian market, including popular movies like Piku,Lootera,Youngistaan,Andaaz Apna Apna, Shor in the city.

The rivalries Netflix has to face in Indian market are Singapor based Hooq-backed by Sony Pictures and Warner Bros,Star India’s Hotstar app, Ogle, ErosNow, DittoTV, BoxTV and more. Hooq’s subscrisrption is starting from Rs199 per month and is popular among movie buffs and Ogle with a price of Rs 249 is doing very well by hosting popular Indian TV shows. Star India’s hotstar app is mainly focused on popular  shows by the Star group only.

The subscription rate of Netflix in India is similar to what they offer in US market.  This price rate will be a challenge to survive In the developing Indian market. The poor Internet connection with low band width is also another limitation .
