Syrian Deputy Prime Minister Walid Al Moualem arrived for a four day visit in New Delhi today. He is expected to seek India’s support for President Bashar al- Assad ahead of peace talks in Geneva. He will be meeting External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and other prominent leaders.
The meetings will be on a host of bilateral issues along with the situation in Syria where Russia has intensified aerial attacks on ISIS strongholds. Mr Moualem also holds the post of Foreign Minister in the Assad regime. India is a supporter of the Russian operations in a civil war torn Syria, while adopting the stand that terror groups must be dealt with effectively.
The Geneva talks are aimed at ending the brutal civil war in the West Asian country where thousands of people have lost their lives and millions ended up refugees across many a European country. More than 300,000 people have been killed in Syria in the past four years and seven million have fled to other countries due to the continuing civil war. While the West is pressing for the ouster of the Syrian President, Russia and China are against the move.
