Goa: The police on Tuesday arrested Syrian national Mahmoud Qusay from Panaji. The charges levelled against him were on the grounds of overstaying in Goa for almost a year, despite the expiration of his visa.
Police reports said that Qusay, has been remanded to seven days in police custody. This was after he was arrested on Monday night.
As per the FIR, the Syrian national was arrested under relevant sections of the Foreigner’s Act.
According to Inspector General of Police, Sunil Garg, was arrested from a casino, and brought in to custody for questioning for several hours.
“Our police team picked him up from an offshore casino last night after receiving information that he was overstaying in India after expiry of his visa. We have detained him and he is being questioned by police and agencies,” Garg had said earlier on Tuesday.
This is the Syrian national who was arrested on the charges of overstaying in Goa despite the expiration of the visa.
The immediate arrest and raid was organised after the Goa police had been on high-alert ever since they received the post card with the threat letters from ISIS. Less than a week ago, yet another Syrian national, Mussa Alareef, was quizzed by officials of the Porvorim police station for overstaying.
