Ten army personnel were buried under snow after a major avalanche struck their camp, which is located at a height of about 19,600 feet in the northern part of the Siachen glacier.
Some sources said that the army personnel includes one Junior Commisioned Officer and nine other ranks of Indian Army officers. The incident happened on Wednesday morning.
According to the reports from the official sources, the ten Army officers,trapped under the snow, were on the southern glacier on patrol duty.
A rescue operation coordinated from Leh and Udhampur has been started by specialised teams of the Indian Army and Air Force to trace out the missing soldiers.
The winter temperature of the Siachen region, world’s highest battle field, often drops to minus 50 degree Celsius. Official statistics shows that about 8,000 Army troops have died on the Siachen region due to avalanches, land slides and altitude sickness.
