Berlin: Malayalam film “Ottal” has been awarded the best children’s film at the Berlin International Film Festival. The film was also honoured with the Crystal Bear award in the ‘Generation KPlus’ section.
The film, directed by Jayaraj Rajashekharan Nair, tells the story about of an old fisherman and his grandson. The movie ahs been adapted from Anton Chekhov’s short story ‘Vanaka’.
Director Jayaraj has been known for adapting literary classic into films. His earlier films were based on Shakespeare’s works such as ‘Othello’ and ‘Anthony and Cleopatra’.
“GENERATION K+ Crystal Bears announced! Best Film: Ottal,” a post on the official Twitter account of Berlinale read.
This is the third time Indian films have triumphed at the Berlin International Film Festival. The earlier winners were ‘Killa’ and ‘Dhanak’ in 2015.
‘Ottal’ had bagged the National Award from India for best fim on Environment Conservation/Preservation and at the 20th International Film Festival of Kerala by sweeping all the top awards
The members of the Children’s Jury in Generation Kplus were Fabian Behrendt, Mathilda Fastabend, Felix Fuentes-Hare, Julian Leisle, Lilia Channary Noack, Mette Maren Schmahl, Fritzi Schneider-Reuter, Moritz Suubenbach, Sophie Tischmann, Tamino Kohne and Irma Weiche.
