New Delhi: The opposition parties on Friday said Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani must apologize for her remark in the Rajya Sabha about Goddess Durga.

Congress members trooped into the well after HRD minister Smriti Irani did not heed their demand to stop reading from a pamphlet brought out by a section of JNU students which had derogatory references to goddess Durga. Deputy Congress leader in RS Anand Sharma asked Irani not to quote the pamphlet, arguing it would set a dangerous precedent.

“The human resource development minister must apologize for her remark about Goddess Durga,” Congress leader Anand Sharma said in Rajya Sabha.

Siding with the Congress on the issue, CPI-M general secretary Sitaram Yechury said: “The quote was deliberate. The BJP used the entire debate to polarize. What was the need to bring in Goddess Durga? Irani has to apologize.”
