Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi will launch the Congress poll campaign during his scheduled two day February 15-16 visit to Assam As the party seeks to retain power amidst a very keen BJP challenge in this key north-eastern state . The Congress Vice President will be addressing a public meeting at Jorhat, the constituency represented by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.
In power from the last 15 years in the state, Congress is going it alone in the polls. BJP has projected Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal as its Chief Ministerial candidate. During his two-day visit, Gandhi will be addressing a booth workers meeting in Sonitpur district and women workers meeting in Lakhimpur district on February 15 to begin with.
He will interact with leaders of the tea garden labourers community in the upper Assam district of Sivasagar as also with Youth Congress and NSUI leaders. Next day, he will take out a padyatra in Sivasagar district. According to various media reports , Rahul Gandhi will be primarily focusing on the large number of tea garden workers to regain position in the crucial upper Assam region which spreads across over 50 of the total 126 assembly seats. Congress think tanks are of the view that it is pertinent to target the tea garden workers’ community as alone they form a chunk of the voters in the upper Assam region and strongly influences around a dozen or more assembly seats. And in the event of a close contest these votes will come in quite handy.
During his rallies Rahul Gandhi is expected to urge the voters to back the Congress led government of Tarun Gogoi and usher in more development in the state.
