Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza

They are proving to be invincible these days on the WTA tour. Indian tennis star Sania Mirza and her Swiss partner Martina Hingis continue their dream run and have now won the St Petersburg Ladies Trophy  and extended their remarkable winning streak to 40 matches in the process.

The top seeded Indo-Swiss pair hardly broke sweat on their way to a 6-3, 6-1 victory over the Russian-Czech team of Vera Dushevina and Barbora Krejcikova in the women’s doubles final that lasted for an hour. This is the fourth title that Sania and Martina have won this year. Their overall trophy count now stands at 13. They started the year with wins in Brisbane and Sydney before completing a hat-trick of Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open. The duo have proved to be a lethal combination on the tour. Both have showed great determination and have gelled well as a pair .

They have been close to unstoppable since an upset loss in the French Open quarter-finals last year. Since then, they have claimed titles at Wimbledon, US Open, Guangzhou, Wuhan, Beijing, the WTA Finals in Singapore, Brisbane and Sydney. They have thus lived up to their billing as the number one ranked doubles pair in the world . And they seem to be playing that way.

It will take a gigantic effort by another pair if they dream to oust the duo from the top rankings. So far no rivals have come as such. Hence their grip on the women’s doubles tour is likely to continue. The law of averages will surely catch up in the future. But nevertheless the winning streak is phenomenal.
