Jawaharlal Nehru University students leader Kanhaiya Kumar called upon Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi at his official residence sparking off lost of speculations about his political ambitions.
Kumar accompanied by five students of Jawaharlal Nehru University students Union (JNUSU) and All India Students’ Federation (AISF) leaders to meet Gandhi at his Tughlak Lane residence.
This is the first time that the Congress vice president has met Kanhaiya since he was released on bail from Tihar jail where he was lodged following an uproar over alleged anti-national activities at the JNU campus. The student leader was charged with sedition.
Earlier, Gandhi had come out in full support for Kanhaiya amid the unrest at the JNU.
Rahul, who had also joined the protest march demanding justice for Kanhaiya, attacked the Centre and Prime Minister Narendra Modi of crushing voices of dissent of students across the country and pitched for a law to protect them from “discrimination” and “suppression”.
Kanhaiya has garnered support from several politicians, the latest being Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, who came criticism for reportedly saying during his address at JNU that the student leader had several similarities with freedom fighter Bhagat Singh. After the furore though , Tharoor clarified his statement. The Congress party though termed Tharoor’s comments as his personal views. (with IANS inputs)
