Voting begins in penultimate phase of West Bengal polls
Polling started in the penultimate phase of West Bengal assembly elections on Saturday at 7 am. In the fifth phase, 53 constituencies will go to polling booth including 31 constituencies in South 24 Parganas and 18 in Hooghly districts besides four in South Kolkata.
As far as the ruling Party Trinamool Congress is concerned, this phase is of very importance since the party Supremo Mamata Banarjee is contesting from Bhawanipur assembly constituency. Besides that, most of the constituencies going to polling booth this time, are considerably citadels of the Trinamool Congress. Another familiar face contesting from Bhawanipur is Netajo Subhash Chadra Bose’s grandnephew Chandra Bose of Bharatiya Janata Party ( BJP).
Trinamol has got 49 out 53 seats of this segment in 2014 Lok Sabha election. However, it is expected that this time trinamool cannot have an easy walk since the Congress- Left alliance have strong candidates all over the constituencies. The bribery allegations against many of the Trinamool’s ministers will also affect their possibilities of emerging victorious.
Along with that, Narada sting tapes have been a main poll issue in the state, after the shocking Sharada chit fund scam.
Many big wigs in Bengal politics like Firhad Hakim, Manish Gupta, Partha Chatterjee, Javed Khan and Subrata Mukherjee will contest this time.
Meanwhile, many crude bombs were found in a random check of Bengal Police, yesterday.Four people were detained by the police in relation to the cases.
There are nearly 1.24 crore voters across 14,642 polling stations, where a total of 349 candidates contest.
