The customary trend in Bollywood is that the big star movies rake in hundred crores and more while the small canvas films bite the dust despite good content. This trend has seen a reversal in the recent months with films such as Wazir, Neerja etc. also performing well at the box office. While there are no “superstar” films lined up for May, the month looks promising for Bollywood due to a few expected script-driven ventures. We present to you our top five movies to watch in May 2016.
Azhar – Release Date: 13 th May 2016
Directed by Tony D’souza, Azhar will bring on scene the life of former Indian captain Mohammed Azharuddin. The film features Emraan Hashmi, Nargis Fakhri and Prachi Desai essaying the lead roles. Sources state that the film will capture Azhar’s childhood in Hyderabad and his inspiring journey to the Indian cricketing circuit. The film also sheds light into his relationship(s) with his first wife Naureen and the much-celebrated second marriage with actress, Sangeeta Bijlani. The trailer shows glimpses of the match-fixing allegation that led to Azhar being labeled as a ’traitor’. If these facts and Azhar’s real-life stardom isn’t enough to drag in to the theatres, we have one more important information for you. Gautam Gulati of Bigg Boss fame will be seen playing the role of Ravi Shastri in this film.
Sarabjith: Release Date: 20 th May 2016
Randeep Hooda’s shocking physical transformation for Sarbjit has been doing the round in social media for quite some time. The film promises much more. It will narrate the story of Indian prisoner, Sarabjit Singh who died in a Pakistani assault after being brutally assaulted by other inmates. The film boasts of a talented cast including Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Richa Chaddha and Darshan Kumar. The song ‘Tung lak’ from this movie has been capturing attention due to its catchy tune and racy lyrics. Sarbjit is directed by Omung Kumar of Mary Kom fame.
Traffic : Release Date: 20 th May 2016
Traffic is touted to be a thriller and a faithful remake of its original that was a trendsetter in the Malayalam industry. The film received critical acclaim and commercial success due to freshness in its theme and pitch-perfect execution.
What makes this even more special is that the incident shown in the film is based on a real event that brought accolades to the police department. The film has an ensemble cast that includes Jimmy Shergill, Manoj Bajpayee, Divya Dutta, Prosenjit Chatterjee, Parambrata Chatterjee and Sachin Khedekar. To retain its original essence, the Malayalam director Rajesh Pillai was roped in to direct this upcoming nail-biter. The entire film was shot on the Mumbai Pune Expressway and Hyderabad.
Waiting – Release Date: 27 th May 2016
The graceful Naseeruddin Shah and the talented Kalki Koechlin. Need we say more? Going by the trailer that had a mix of humour, emotion and drama, the expectations from this movie are high. The film deals with an unusual relationship between two different people who meet each other in a hospital, while nursing their respective spouses in coma. An able cast that includes Suhasini Maniratnam and Rajat Kapoor backs the above-mentioned two superlative actors. The film received praises at the London Asian Film Festival and the director, Anu Menon bagged the Best Director Award for this venture. In an interview, the director said that Waiting is a gentle and poignant film without any melodrama and will urge the audiences to reach out to these characters and help them.

This May, he will be seen in the third installment of the successful horror series; 1920. Priyanka and Parineeti Chopra’s cousin, Meera Chopra will be playing the female lead opposite Sharman Joshi. The trailer has managed to catch the attention of the audience with scenes that send chills down your spine. Sources state that Sharman will be seen as an exorcist in this film. The film is directed by Tinu Suresh Desai and will also feature Splitsvilla 1 winner, Vishal Karwal.
