His understanding of cricket is exceptional, at times better than that of some experienced cricketer commentators. Harsha Bhogle — the man who had not played a single international cricket match or even a Ranji trophy – has tremendous and fabulous understanding cricket. He has won the hearts of a lot of cricket fans through his mesmerising voice and analysis of the game. One of the finest commentators in the history of cricket is again in news, because the world’s richest and autocratic cricket board does not want Harsha to lend his voice to IPL season 9 (2016).
This is not the first time that a commentator had been sacked by Board. But Harsha, one of the most respected and loved voices in India or even in world cricket today — has not been treated by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) the way he should be.
Harsha was neither a rebel nor a loyalist in the BCCI commentary panel. But in the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2016, he was mired in a controversy. His verbal spat with the officials of Vidarbha Cricket Association (Current BCCI president Shashank Manohar was former president of this association), during India’s opening knock against New Zealand is said to have cost him the job.
Secondly, Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan, who was very active on Twitter during the world cup, criticised Harsha (without mentioning his name) for not supporting Indian cricket team in a group match played against Bangladesh.
Pre-tournament favourites India was not up to their form and Bangladesh outplayed India till last three balls of that match and those three balls cost Bangladesh their match.
Harsha praised Bangladesh cricketers for their brilliant performance, even though they lost the match.
Harsha is not Bachchan, there is vast difference between both when it comes to cricket. How can a cricket fan like Bachchan who blindly supports Indian cricket team and ask commentator of Harsha’s calibre to support Indian team for their underpar display. Bachchan also tweeteed against Harsha for being biased. Who the hell is Bachchan to accuse Harsha of bias?!
India’s limited overs captain MS Dhoni, who behaved rudely with a journalist in the post match press conference also seconded Bachchan by tweeting “Nothing to add”.
Most of the people were taken by surprise after ‘captain cool’s’ behaviour.
After lot of attention he got in media and the support from his fans. He posted on Facebook acknowledging the support.
In his post he mentioned that he is clueless on his ouster.
The reason behind his termination is now an open secret. Those who criticise the board won’t be spared. Harsha is getting lot of support from his fans. His fans created hashtag ‘#BringBackHarsha’. For now, the most adorable commentator won’t be seen in IPL commentary box.
