Star striker Cristiano Ronaldo scored a stunning hat-trick to pull Real Madrid back from a 2-0 first-leg deficit against VFL Wolfsburg and into the Champions League semi-finals.
The Portugese scored twice within 90 seconds in the first half and added another goal with a superb chipped free-kick near the end of the game.
The Spanish giants were in danger after the first-leg defeat against Wolfsburg. Real Madrid showed a spectacular performance in the second-leg.
After the match the Portuguese star hits back at critics. He said despite the criticism that he has faced, his statistics show he is having a fantastic year.
“Considering this has been a ‘bad’ season for me it has not been that bad. People can criticise me but I just keep in going and the numbers are there for all to see,” said Ronaldo.
“Just because I have scored three goals does not mean it’s my best game. People know that I always give the maximum. The numbers do not lie. I will always try to help the team. The goals are in my DNA, but the important thing was the team,” the Portuguese said.
He has scored 46 goals in 42 matches so far this season. Ronaldo became the first player in Champions League history to score more than 15 goals in consecutive seasons. Ronaldo has scored 16 goals from 10 champions league matches.
Real Madrid coach Zinadine Zidane praised Ronaldo’s stunning performance. What can I say about Cristiano Ronaldo? He has showed again he is the best player in the world. He is a special player,” Zidane said.
“But at same time, Cristiano needs all the team. What we want, what he wants, is to speak of the team, what they have done together.” On his team’s overall performance, Zidane added: “What we had to do was to show intensity, but also use our heads. My message, above all, was to have patience.
