There are 12 nominated members in Rajya Sabha out of which seven seats were vacant. President has nominated six persons and one remaining seat will also be filled soon.
Persons having special knowledge in literature, science, art and social service and sports are nominated in this category. Although independent, the nominated members always vote along with the government. Filling of vacancies will bolster the NDA's numbers in the Upper House where it lacks majority.
Lyricist Javed Akhtar, Theatre artist B Jayashree, Journalist H K Dua, Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar, Economist Bhalchandra Mungekar, Professor Mrinal Miri, Dr Ashok Ganguly had completed their terms as nominated members.
The six who have been nominated are Hindutva advocate, veteran BJP leader Subramanian Swamy, economist Narendra Jadhav, Olympic medalist Mary Kom, Malayalam actor Suresh Gopi, former BJP MP and cricket commentator Navjot Singh Sidhu and pro-RSS journalist Swapan Dasgupta.
With the consultation of the members of Modi government, President Pranab Mukherjee nominated these six persons as new Rajya Sabha members this evening, sources said. A formal notification regarding their nomination to the House of Elders will be issued shortly.
Under the provisions of the Constitution, the President can nominate 12 members to the Rajya Sabha on the recommendation of the Prime Minister-headed Union Council of Ministers.
As six members have been nominated only a single slot would remain vacant in the House.
