One killed in violence at Aligarh Muslim University

A former student was killed and several others were injured when violence erupted at the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) late on Saturday.

Trouble started when a resident of Mumtaz hostel was assaulted and his room was torched. The victim rushed to the proctor’s office to file a complaint. As soon as news of the incident spread, students belonging to the two rival factions gathered and a clashes broke out.

A former student of Masters in Physical Educatio,n Mehtab was shot dead near the Proctor’s office where the warring groups exchanged fire. Three students were critically injured in the gun fire.

The rampaging students torched a jeep and over half-a-dozen bikes. They also set burnt the proctor’s office.

Authorities deployed Rapid Action Force (RAF) to prevent the escalation of violence. The violence was so widespread that it took the police and the special force several hours to bring the situation under control.

Students told Narada News that trouble between rival groups belonging to Azamgarh and Sambhal regions has been simmering since quite some time now.

RAF has been deployed at all sensitive spots especially in view of the entrance test for the engineering courses is scheduled for today. More than 13,000 candidates are expected to appear from the Aligarh campus centre alone.

Earlier this year, in an incident of firing, an M.Tech student lost his vision after over hundred pellets were lodged in his brain.

Rivalry between students groups belonging to different regions have led to clashes before too in AMU.
