BJP MP Sakshi Maharaj, sparked another controversy on Saturday by saying that the status of women in Islam are not better than footwear. Maharaj who is always in the news for his controversial statements also said the country should be governed by the Constitution, not by Fatwas. “Women must be allowed to pray in mosques,” the lawmaker from Unnao constituency said.
The controversial comments came in the wake of Maharashtra’s Shani Shingnapur temple throwing open its doors to women, ending centuries-old ban. The move had come after high voltage campaigns and legal challenges.
All India Muslim Women Personal Law Board chief Shaista Amber responded that before saying something about Islam, Maharaj should learn about it. Islam gives women all kind of rights, she added.
Congress leader Akhilesh Pratap Singh said Maharaj is trying to polarise two communities before the 2017 UP Assembly election.
