In a major move to garner the support of Dalit voters in Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, BJP President Amit Shah had meal on Tuesday with Dalits during his visit to Varanasi. BJP leader had his food with Dalit families in Jogiyapur village in Sevapuri assembly constituency, BJP Kashi region spokesperson Sanjay Bharadwaj said.
According to him, the BJP president shared the meal prepared in the kitchen of Girija Prasad Bind and Iqbal Bind along with many other Dalit families.
Girija Prasad Bind and Iqbal Bind families belong to Dalit community.
Meantime, the move has triggered a fresh controversy in UP as it was clearly based on the caste. UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav said that the act is purely eying on votes in the coming election and his Samajwadi Party will not see people on the basis of caste and creed.
“We don’t see things on the basis of caste and creed. One should reach out to people on the basis of work and achievements,” the Chief Minister said.
He stated that the state has witnessed to many such things in the past too. “Elections are near and these are done to give a message. Some will take a dip in river also,” he said taking a dig at Shah who took a holy dip with Dalit sadhus at Kumbh in Ujjain.
Referring to his recent lunch at the construction site of the new secretariat building in UP, Yadav said he did not know the caste of the person sat next to him.“If you all have pictures, go and find out the caste of the labourer who sat next to me,” Akhilesh told reporters.
After the meal, Shah left for Allahabad from Varanasi airport.
His rally in the state is seen as a big move to woo Dalit voters in UP who constitute 17 percent of UP population. The BJP has completely shifted its focus to the state, ahead of the state polls in 2017.
Four days ago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had spoken in Saharanpur in Western UP marking the second year of his rule.BJP’s executive meet will also be held in Allahabad on June 12 and 13. The party will prepare a masterplan for the run up for the election in the meet.
Meanwhile, speaking in an election rally in UP, the party chief said today that BJP will make UP the number one state in the country, if the people of UP elect them.
