Congress leader and former Finance Minister P Chidambaram has been nominated from Maharashtra for the biennial elections to Rajya Sabha while senior leaders Kapil Sibal and Jairam Ramesh have been named from Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka respectively.
Congress President Sonia Gandhi had taken the decision to nominate the leaders for the June 11 Rajya Sabha elections.
Oscar Fernandes from Karnataka, Congress general secretary Ambika Soni from Punjab, Chaya Verma from Chhattisgarh , Vivek Tankha from Madhya Pradesh and Pradeep Tamta from Uttarakhand are other Congress leaders nominated for the polls.
Meanwhile on 27 May, DMK nominees RS Bharathi and TKS Elangovan filed their nominations to fill six vacancies from Tamil Nadu. They filed their nomination papers with Assembly Secretary AMP Jamaludeen, who is the Returning Officer for the biennial elections.
A posse of DMK leaders including MK Stalin, Durai Murugan, TR Baalu and a number of DMK MLAs were present when Mr Bharathi and Mr Elangovan filed their nominations.
