Nandini, a 19-year-old woman from Doddhalli, Karnataka gave birth to the ‘heaviest’ baby in the country on May 23. The baby weighing about 6.82 was born in Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences, after conducting a caesarean surgery.
“It is the heaviest baby so far reported in India, last one reported was somewhere around 5.8 kg,” HIMS Medical Superintendent Dr K Shankar told PTI.
Since the baby is unusual due to the overweight, doctors said that the baby has been kept under observation. The doctors will perform an abdominal scanning and blood test of the baby. So far, both the mother and baby are healthy.
The new infant broke the record of a baby in Uttar Pradesh weighing 6.7kg.
The heaviest baby in the world is in Italy weighed about 10.2 kg.
“It is the biggest baby in India, I can say. Whether it is the biggest in the world, I cannot say right now,” Dr Venkatesh R, district health official in Hassan district, told BBC Hindi.
Doctors also said that the baby is also very tall. They said that the baby’s height is 62 cm as against the normal Indian baby’s height of 50cm.
