In 2012 London Olympics  Sania Mirza was forced to partner Leander Paes but this time around world No. 1 doubles player Sania Mirza has “conveyed” her decision to AITA top brass about her preferred mixed doubles partner at the Rio Games. “I have already spoken to AITA and conveyed my decision on the Olympic issue. They have a meeting on the 11th (June) and let’s wait for that,” Sania told PTI during an interaction .

Asked if she would divulge as to what transpired during your discussions with AITA bosses, Sania said a curt no. “No, I won’t.”

It’s no secret that Sania and Rohan Bopanna are likely to pair in mixed doubles, the category where India have the best chance of winning a medal.

Meanwhile , according to various media reports coming in Rohan Bopanna has picked young Saketh Myneni over the legendary Leander Paes .

In a letter to All India Tennis Association (AITA) on Olympic selection, Bopanna has made his choice of nominating his doubles partner on Saturday. Bopanna has secured a direct entry for Rio Olympics courtesy his top-10 ranking.

“Proud to have earned a direct acceptance to men’s doubles,” the world number 10 Bopanna said.
“I have earned the right to exercise my judgement on my partner for Rio Olympics. Look forward to AITA supporting me in the lead up to the Rio Games,” Bopanna writes to AITA.

The AITA will have a selection meet on Saturday to pick the Olympic team.

The ball is now in AITA’s court  and remains to be seen whether they are keen to avoid a London 2012 fiasco repeating all over again. Personal egos could once again mar India’s chances of medal at Rio Olympics 2016. We paid for it at London 2012 and Rio Olympics 2016 could well see a repeat.
