Bharatiya Janata Party MP Subramanian Swamy now wants Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) be renamed after Subhas Chandra Bose. He came up with this ‘revolutionary’ opinion, while sharing his happiness after the JNU Executive Council (EC) gave a nod for renaming the varsity library after Dr. BR. Ambedkar.
The EC’s move came following a demand from the ABVP, the student wing of the ruling BJP.
“Happy to be informed JNU central library will be re-named after Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar. Soon JNU as Netaji Bose U? Cultural Revolution!” he tweeted.
This is not the first time Swamy is training his guns on JNU.
Few months back, he had demanded clearing JNU hostels of anti-nationals.
“JNU must shut down for 4 months and reopen after getting the students to sign an affidavit stating to uphold Constitution of India, only those would be allowed to come back,” he said.
He had also said the central government has the right to see whether the money is being used for academic activities.
JNU is opposed to India and many of its professors have started speaking out because they fear that the government is predisposed towards them, Swamy had stated then.
JNU’s Left student leaders termed the ABVP demand to rename university library after Ambedkar as “ironic” and condemned its move to appropriate Ambedkar.
Condemning the ABVP move, JNU Students’ Association Vice President Shehla Rashid Shora wrote on Facebook that ABVP has absolutely no role in building the JNU, its library, buildings, or its culture. “They are here only to destroy it. If they are so concerned about library facilities, why don’t they take a position on BHU library issue, where RSS stooge VC has rusticated students just for demanding better library facilities” she asked.
She also claimed in her post on Facebook that in the same meeting, where JNU Executive Council took the decision to rename JNU library as Ambedkar library, a Dalit faculty from the Centre for Nano Studies who was supposed to become the Chairperson, as per seniority, was bypassed and the VC arbitrarily handpicked another person and made him the Chairperson, citing his “vision.”
The ABVP in April had requested the University Executive Council for renaming of the library after Ambedkar, the convention centre after A P J Abdul Kalam and the stadium after freedom fighter Birsa Munda.
The EC gave a go ahead to the decision placed by library committee of JNU, after a long discussion on Tuesday.
“The proposal was placed before the council today and was approved unanimously,” an executive council member said. The EC also made it clear that no proposals were not placed to rename stadium and convention hall.
Meanwhile, welcoming the decision of EC, Saurabh Sharma of the ABVP told Indian Express that EC has shown respect to Babasaheb by accepting their request. “But our demands are not done. We will fight for renaming the stadium after Birsa Munda and the convention centre after Kalam,” he said.
