Team India’s new head coach: Anil Kumble or Ravi Shastri?
The suspense as to who will be finally Zimbabwean Duncan Fletcher’s successor as head coach of Team India will be known very soon. BCCI president Anurag Thakur, has indicated that new head coach will be made by Thursday (June 23) evening, according to various media reports.
“Announcement on Indian cricket team’s head coach will be made by this evening,” Thakur, currently in Dharamsala for the BCCI’s first annual cricket conclave, briefed reporters . The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), comprising former star batsmen Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman, and headed by Sanjay Jagdale was given the responsibility to appoint India’s next coach.
The CAC besides interviewing former Team Director Ravi Shastri and former skipper Anil Kumble also interviewed former Australian players Tom Moody and Stuart Law, retired English first class cricketer Andy Moles and ex Indian batsmen Lalchand Rajput and Pravin Amre.
Former India skipper Anil Kumble is the front- runner for the post. The CAC are reportedly happy with his presentations for the future of Indian cricket. Ravi Shastri did not make any presentations . He seem to have cited his stint with the team in the last 18 months to stake his claim for the job.
The legends have also according to media reports spoken to Test skipper Virat Kohli to find out his opinion on the tricky issue. It may be recalled that Virat Kohli had in the past had talked about how influential and inspiring Ravi Shastri as Team India director has been to the young team, Hence Shastri is in the race thanks to the team’s positive feedback. This may be one of e reasons why the CAC wantted to speak to Kohli before finalising the name. The captain’s voice will be crucial as in the past too the skipper’s take mattered in coach selection . It is well known how then skipper Sourav Gangly batted hard to get John Wright, Greg Chappell appointed as head coach.
