India’s tour of Zimbabwe took a completely different turn on Sunday when a huge controversy involving rape charges got associated to one of the Indian cricket players.

An official who was in association with one of the sponsors of the ongoing series was arrested under alleged rape charges though the official pleaded to be innocent to the whole charge.

The topic took the headlines by storm when someone from the Zimbabwean media reported the involvement of an unnamed Indian cricketer in the rape which happened and mentioning that the Indian cricketer had been arrested on the grounds of rape.

The reports which came in earlier stated that the it was due to India’s ambassador to African nations, R Masakui, who tried to went ahead to evade the arrest of the Indian player on Saturday night at a hotel in Harare, which is the ground for the ongoing matches during India’s tour in Zimbabwe.

According to the official sources which happened to come out later in India, that the only person arrested after the incident was only a person in association with official sponsors of the ongoing series in Zimbabwe.

“Regarding media reports of an Indian cricketer being involved in an alleged case of rape in Harare, we have spoken to our Ambassador to Zimbabwe. The report is totally false. No Indian cricketer is involved,” the sources said.

“An Indian affiliated with one of the sponsors has been arrested. He has also denied the charge and said he is ready for a DNA test to prove his innocence. Our Ambassador is following the matter closely,” they added.

The BCCI hasn’t made any statements in this series of incidents as it is not certain about the facts and events which actually led to this controversy.

“We are keeping a close watch on the development. It is a serious issue. Being aware of the sensitive nature of the issue, the BCCI won’t make comments without ascertaining facts,” said a top Board official on condition of anonymity.

India are currently engaged in a three-match Twenty20 series against the host Zimbabwe after clean sweeping the ODI series by 3-0.

The Indian team lost to the Zimbabwean side during the first T20 match by mere 2 runs, which was played between the two in Harare, but there are still two more matches to go and the victor of the T20 series is still not confirmed.
