Akhilesh Yadav mourns death of India hockey wizard Mohd Shahid

Mourning the demise of former Indian hockey captain Mohammed Shahid, Uttar Pradesh CM Akhilesh Yadav said the ace hockey player would always be remembered for his unique style of playing.

Shahid was a resident of Varanasi and died earlier in the day in a Gurgaon hospital.

The former hockey wizard was part of the Gold medal-winning Indian hockey team at the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

He was awarded the Arjuna Award, Padma Shri and the Yash Bharati award.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, paying tributes to one of the best known hockey stars of the country, said the government tried its best to save Shahid.

“In the untimely and unfortunate demise of Mohammed Shahid, India has lost a talented sportsman who played with immense passion & vigour,” Modi tweeted.
