John Cena, 39, hosted the 2016 ESPY Awards. Cena – who is a funny, charming and fantastic at keeping large crowds captivated, is hosting an awards show. Though he said that he’s “pretty terrified” of doing this, he was a great hit!
As we all know that ESPY Award (short for Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Award) is presented by the American broadcast television network ABC, and previously ESPN, to recognize the individual and team athletic achievement and other sports-related performance during the calendar year preceding a given annual ceremony.
Cena started off by “commending” the athletes for their brave message at the beginning of the program. For the first time ever, the show is honoring not one but three athletes – Kobe Bryant, Peyton Manning and Abby Wambach – who retired in the past year.
The ESPY’s speech always features loads of sports jokes, understandably, and as a sports fan with a good sense of humor, we did get to see that side of Cena for a few minutes on Wednesday night. He joked about all of the major stories in sports over the last year and of the professional wrestling. He did compare every sport to WWE, which was pretty humorous.
“Why did they go get a guy from the red-headed stepchild of sport and entertainment? Why did ESPN get a host from the ESPN? I mean, it’s rigged! Did I just spoil the surprise for some of the people? It’s scripted entertainment. What we do is fake!” John said. “So, me hosting the ESPYs… that’s crazy. Or is it genius? It’s time to take a look at yourself sports, and realize that you’re more like the WWE than you ever imagined.”
The best was when Cena couldn’t help but laugh at his own jokes. And believe us when we say, nobody was safe from being called out that night.
You can actually tell how much fun the show was.
