A recent study states that one of the biggest reasons behind obesity is western eating habits. The research has found that western diet affects the hippocampus area of the brain, hindering the ability to block out memories that are no longer useful. Unhealthy eating habits appear to hamper the brain’s ability to forget about the need for food when you are full, it states. The findings were revealed at the Society for the Study of Ingestive Behaviour’s annual meeting in Portugal.
More than one-third (34.9% or 78.6 million) of US adults are obese. The results were revealed after academics in Australia tested a group of people who ate a diet high in sugar and fat and low in fruit, vegetables and fibre and another group who ate more healthily. Studies in rats have shown that the Western diet can weaken the blood-brain barrier, which helps protect the brain from harmful agents in the bloodstream.
Another finding of the study was that those who consume western-style diet were slower at learning and had a poorer memory. All-in-all people should ideally shift to healthier diet if they want to lead a healthy life. A study by Macquarie University has found that natural brain process is hampered in people who consume western diets high in sugar and fat. The study supported by the Australian Research Council.
