Death is an inevitable reality. In general, death is painful, but when it comes to celebrities, it becomes all the more painful for us as they inspire us through their movies. Film actors, through the characters they portray and the kind of films they appear, have a psychological impact on cine lovers. Here are a few Malayalam celebrities who left the film industry shocked with their untimely death:
Kalabhavan Mani, who started his career as a mimicry artist of Kalabhavan troupe, acted in Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu movies. 6 March, 2016, is considered to be one of the most shocking days for all Malayalees, as it was on this day that versatile actor Kalabhavan Mani passed away in an untimely manner. He died at the age of 45 and his demise was a shock to all Malayalam movie lovers. Traces of methyl alcohol were found in his body and this was said to be the reason behind his death. The police have started an investigation after a request from his brother Ramakrishnan. Several questions linger: Why would an actor like Mani commit suicide? If not so, who would have killed him and why? What's the actual cause behind his death? His death is still veiled in mystery and the police claim that they are still on the process of investigation. Apart from all this, it is a great lost for the Indian film industry.
Silk Smitha was the southern Indian sex bomb on late 80s and her life proved to be an inspiration for many biopics like 'Dirty Picture', in which Vidya Balan essayed her role. In 1996, Smitha was found hanging from the ceiling fan of the bedroom in her Chennai apartment. It is believed that she wanted to become a producer, but financial problems, disillusionment in love and alcoholism apparently led her to depression and made her commit suicide. Smitha had started her career to support her family, but later this family allegedly turned against her.
Although he was on silver screen for just six years, actor-cum-singer Santhosh Jogi managed to create a mark in Mollywood industry and even shared screen space with veteran Mollywood actors like Mammootty and Mohanlal. He was found hanging in his friend's flat in Thrissur on 13 April, 2010, at the age of 35. The reason behind his death is not clear, but there were rumours that he committed suicide because of some family issues. He was married to Jijy and has two daughters.
Rani Padmini had acted predominantly in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada film industries. She entered the Malayalam industry in 1981, with her debut being “Samgharsham". Rani had plans of building a house from her savings and had kept Rs 15 lakh at home (which was a huge amount in the 80s). Rani's security, cook and driver allegedly killed her and her mother on 15 October, 1986, and stole the money. Though she was in the industry for just seven years, she had worked in almost 40 films and maintained good relations with politicians and cinema technicians.
Shobha started her career as a child actress at the age of four in Malayalam movie “Jeevitha Yaathra” in 1965. She was in a relationship with renowned cameraman and director Balu Mahendra. Though he was married and had a kid, he secretly married her in 1978. She committed suicide on 1 May, 1980, at the age of 17. She was the first Malayalam actress to win Urvashi award. Her life was adapted into a Malayalam movie by veteran director K.G George called "Lekhayude Maranam: Oru Flashback".
Vijayasree is considered to be the most beautiful and sexy actress Mollywood had ever seen and was known as 'Marilyn Monroe’ of the South in the early 70s. She committed suicide on 17 March, 1974, at the age of 21. Rumours suggest that she committed suicide as a well-known film producer had been blackmailing her using her nude pictures taken during the shooting of film “Ponnapuram Kotta". Her life was made into movie 'Nayika' by director Jayaraj.
Nandu was the only brother to three famous Malayalam actresses -- Kalpana, Urvashi and Kalaranjini. He had acted in director Tulasi Das' trendsetter soft-porn movie “Layanam” along with Silk Smitha. Prince died at the age of 27 and the reason being a failed love affair.
Mayoori, also known as Shalini in Tamil industry, made her debut in Malayalam with the film 'Summer in Bethlehem'. Though she had acted in less than 20 films, she did many meaningful films in Malayalam and Tamil. She committed suicide in 2005 at the age of 22. Before committing suicide, she left a letter for her brother, in which she wrote of having “lost faith in life so I am going”.
Actress Priyanka was found dead in her flat in Kozhikode on 26 November, 2011, at the age 21. Reports said that she was two months pregnant at the time of her death. Though it appeared to be a suicide, her mother alleged that she was murdered. Her mother talked of Priyanka's boyfriend Rahim and the duo's relationship with Faiz, a smuggler. Priyanka's mother suspected Rahim's friend Renjith of having killed her. She alleged that Rahim and Faiz had used Priyanka for their fraudulent activities.
Sreenath, the jovial and charming actor of Malayalam film industry, made his debut through“Shalini Ente Koottukari”. The actor married his co-actress Shanti Krishna in 1984, but divorced and then married Latha, and they have a son. He committed suicide on 23 April, 2010, at the age of 53 at a hotel in Kothamangalam, Ernakulam district. The reasons behind his suicide are not known but his brother claimed that he was disturbed with issues in the film industry.
