Perimenopause is nothing but the time around menopause. This refers to the time duration when a woman’s body makes a natural alteration toward permanent infertility. Perimenopause is also called the menopausal transformation.
Usually perimenopause is observed in women at different ages. They will experience signs of menopause like irregular periods, sometime in their 40s. Some women show symptoms during mid 30s.
The level of female hormone estrogen increases and drops down unevenly during perimenopause. The menstrual cycles might be long or short. They may also have menstrual cycle during which their ovaries do not release egg. Treatments are available to ease these signs.
Women experience hot flashes during perimenopause. The intensity, frequency and temperature vary from person to person, though. Sleep problems are often observed due to hot flashes or sweating in night. Sometimes sleep timings cannot be predicted.
Mood swings, irritation or risk of depression during perimenopause increases. These symptoms may cause sleep disruption due to hot flashes. Mood swings may also be caused by elements that are not related to the hormonal changes of perimenopause.
During perimenopause, the sexual arousal and desire for intercourse may change. But most women who had satisfactory sexual activity before menopause are likely to have same during perimenopause and beyond as well. So the sexual function is unpredictable.
Estrogen levels that show a decline can lead to adverse changes in blood cholesterol levels. It can lead to a rise in LDL which is also called bad cholesterol. This leads to a high risk of heart disease. Meanwhile, the HDL, which is good cholesterol, may decline in many women as they age. This leads to the risk of heart disease.
When estrogen levels decrease, the vaginal tissues lose lubrication and elasticity that makes sex painful. Low estrogen levels could also cause vaginal or urinary infections. Loss of tissue may lead to urinary incontinence. This could be sorted out by using lubricants during sex.
