SRM Group of educational institutions Chairman T R Pachamuthu has been arrested by the central crime branch of the Chennai city police on Thursday after 111 students lodged cheating case against his group.
According the complaints filed by the students, who were cheated after promising medical seats in his colleges, a sum of RS. 75 crores have been collected from them by the group, offering seats.
Last week, the Madras High Court had come down heavily against the Chennai city police for not taking actions against the group chairman for his alleged connection with medical admission scam.
He was arrested on Thursday night, under the sections 420 (cheating), 406 (criminal misappropriation of property entrusted to someone) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the IPC.
The Chennai police so far have arrested five people in connection with the scam.
The case against the SRM group was firstly lodged after a close aide of Pachamuthu, Madhavan went missing in May.
A film producer and Managing Partner of Vendhar Movies Madhavan used to work as an agent to the SRM group.
The police found out a suicide note in his room, after his mysterious disappearing.
In the alleged suicide note, Madhavan disclosed that he was not able to fulfill the promises he made after collecting crores of money from the parents of students offering medical seats.
According to the police sources, he also cited NEET entrance test as a chronic hurdle in his path.
Complains against Madhavan started pouring in, after his alleged absconding.
Some others came up against Pachamuthu as well, after the complains against his close aide begun surfacing.
Pahcamuthu has been questioned overnight in which he denied any connection with Madhavan. He reportedly accused Madhavan of forgery charges and creating fake documents of his company.
