Dalit youth’s custodial death: 15 cops suspended in Kanpur

All 15 policemen of  a police outpost in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur have been suspended and one has been accused of murder after a Dalit youth died in the police custody under suspicious circumstances.

A large group of people thronged at the police station after the incident, and clashed with police personnel who were on duty in the station on Thursday.

Locals reportedly pelted stones at policemen and vandalized several vehicles.

Kamal Valmiki, 26, a resident of Shiv Katra village, was picked up reportedly in a case of robbery on Wednesday. He was later found dead at Ahirwan police station on Thursday afternoon.

The family of the victim alleged that Valmiki was allegedly beaten with rods, abused and humiliated at the police outpost, where he was brought in for questioning over the robbery.

 The family members of the deceased have filed an FIR against the station in charge and other police personnel for beating Kamal to death.
Police, however, claimed that the youth committed suicide.
