Olympic Silver medalist P V Sindhu and her coach Pullela Gopichand were accorded a grand welcome as the shuttler-coach duo arrived at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad from Rio early today.
The badminton star was received by hundreds of students, sports enthusiasts, a large contingent of Telangana ministers and public representatives led by minister K T Rama Rao and a team of Andhra Pradesh ministers led by Deputy Chief Minister Nimmakayala Chinarajappa amid celebration and loud cheers on both side of the road.
Sindhu, displaying the silver medal, stood in a special bus, commissioned from Mumbai draped with long strings of marigold, as it slowly drove 30 km to the Gachibowli stadium for around 3 hours.
The government hosted a grand reception for Sindhu at the stadium amidst song and dance programmes.
Earlier, the Telangana government already announced a cash reward of Rs 5 crore for the Olympic Silver medalist and Rs 1 crore for her coach Gopichand for bringing home the country’s first Olympic silver medal in women’s category.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu also announced a Rs 3-crore cash reward and offered a 1,000 square yard residential plot in the upcoming capital Amaravati and a Group-1 government job to the shuttler.
