Everybody from the grannies to the kids are familiar with one of the longest running animated television series The Simpsons. It has been rocking the world since December 1989. This comedy series managed to air over 500 episodes in last 26 and a half years.
The Simpsons is going to achieve another milestone by airing its 600th show this fall. But that is not the only mark they wish to achieve. This decision has been followed by the excitement of the producers and the crew while discussing the script and the story of the episode. The executive producer, Matt Selman, reveals “This was just going to be a regular episode, but the table read went so well, in a fit of passion and excitement and ambition and excess, we decided to supersize it,”.
TCA Summer Press Tour announced that as a tribute to F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, the episode has been given the title The Great Phatsby. That’s not it, there a twist in this news too. The Great Phatsby is going to be a hip-hop genre, and the 60 minutes show (including the time for commercials) is going to be presented like a rap album with two parts.
Basically, the story is largely set in Burn’s Mansion in the Springfield Hapmtons. Our man, Homer is going to be the narrator. He finds himself in a similar position as Nick Corroway from the book. Salmen explains “Burns is an old-school Gatsby and Jay G is a new-school Gatsby,” he then follows this with “their mutual Gatsbyism brings them together.” In case you’re wondering who Jay G is, he is a strange yet famous hip-hop artist named after Jay Gatsby.
The episode is a tale of their friendship, which turns into a series of betrayal, followed by a quest for vengeance.
Other things to look forward to in the episode are Marge establishing her own boutique and Lisa dating a rich boyfriend.
The team that is put together to get “revenge” from Jay G, consists of “Burns and Homer and Bart and our all-star team of rappers” says Selman. Jazzy James, who is a rapper, is also on their team. Jazzy James’ voice-over, for the show, will be given by Keegan- Michael Key. Taraji P. Henson is also on the list of guest voice-overs.
Jim Beanz has also been appointed by Salmen to produce original hip-hop tracks for The Great Phatsby. He will also be producing two new raps based in the themes of betrayal and revenge, for this Fox comedy.
The episode is due to release in January. It is going to be a second attempt in airing a long episode. The first was the two-part episode in 1995 “Who Shot Mr. Burns?”. The two parts served as season 6 finale and season 7 premier.
