Bharatiya Janata Party MP Udit Raj on Monday said Jamaica’s Usain Bolt won nine Olympic gold medals despite being born in poverty because the star sprinter’s trainer advised him to eat beef, which triggers storm.
“Usain Bolt of Jamaica was poor and trainer advised him to eat beef both the times and he scored 9 gold medals in Olympics,” the Lok Sabha member from North West Delhi said in a tweet.
After being trolled for his remark, Raj, in another tweet, clarified that his remark was in context of allegations that athletes don’t have enough facilities to train.
“I intended to convey-players & society to look at ways to win in games rather blaming circumstances & Govt & eating is their choice,” tweeted Raj.
He added that as Usain Bolt and his trainer found ways and means to win medals similarly our players and trainers should do as per their circumstances.
“My tweet is not even remotely connected to advocate beef eating rather it is reproduction of Bolt trainer statement,” Raj added in another tweed.
The Dalit leader who is also chairperson of the All India Confederation of SC/ST Organizations had recently criticised cow vigilante groups and their attacks on Dalits, saying, “the so-called protectors of the Hindu religion must answer if they consider lives of Dalits to be worth to be of less value than animal.”
