Hindu Munnani activist's murder sparks bandh, vandalism in Coimbatore

In a shocking incident and bound to create tension, a prominent Hindu Munnani functionary C Sasikumar was hacked to death in Coimbatore on Thursday night. Following the brutal murder, Subramaniam, state president of Hindu Munnani, in protest called for a state wide bandh on Friday claiming many party leaders have being attacked for sometime in the state because of inadequate measures by the state force.
Sasikumar, district spokesperson of the organisation, was returning home in Subramaniampalayam, on the city outskirts, on a two-wheeler when unidentified assailants chased him on motorcycles and attacked him with sickles. According to various media reports, a gang of four men in motorcycles chased and attacked 36-year-old Sasikumar with swords. He passed away late night in a private hospital. He had 11 injuries in his body.
Due to the bandh call, 90 percent of the shops in the city were closed in Coimbatore and Tirupur districts. Bus and taxi services remain suspended. The agitators attacked many shops even when some of them were shut. A motorcycle was put on fire. Many other vehicles, including auto-rickshaws, were targeted. A police personnel got injured in the clash.
The video footage showed that the policemen deployed in Coimbatore city to handle the tensed situation were insufficient.
The violence is now reportedly spreading to other places, especially in the commercial towns in the district. Pollachi, one of the commercial hub in the district, also got affected due to it. Public transport services are getting suspended in the afternoon. Many people didn't even know about the murder and further incidents when they started their day in the morning .
Reports said the protest in Coimbatore is getting a communal colour since the agitators are targeting specific community-owned commercial establishments.
Hindu Munnani workers attacked a government bus in Coonoor, a town near to Ootty. The police have arrested the defaulters. Some blockade reported in Kotagiri, another town. Ootty to Coimbatore government bus services has been affected. Police have arrested two person in connection with the murder after noon.
