How certain food items prevent cancer when included in the diet
The term cancer often invokes fear into each and everyones mind. Since cancer is an unpredictable disease and is very slow to detect, one will be wanting to know the ways so as to how to prevent it.
While most of our everyday habits can be changed, which includes smoking, drinking , consumption of fast food etc. , we need to find out some ways in order to try to prevent cancer naturally.
The most easy method that can be adapted by us will be including certain wonder vegetables in our diet so that they give us a mental peace that inspite of all our bad habits we are trying to prevent cancer. Some vegetables that help in preventing cancer are the following:-
1) Allium vegetables (Garlic, yellow and green onions, leeks, scallions and shallots)
These vegetables contain high amount of sulphur, which gives their unique taste which is quite unpleasant but highly beneficial. They also contain other compounds such as manganese, copper, Vitamin B6, Vitamin C and selenium. They also help to stimulate glutathione, which is an important antioxidant for the liver and helps in detoxification of the entire system.The sulphur compounds helps to boost the natural defence of the immune system against cancer cells and also has a potential to reduce the growth of tumour cells. Including allium vegetables in diet helps in preventing mouth, oesophagus, larynx, breast, colon, ovary and kidney cancer to an extent.
2) Cruciferous vegetables (Cauliflower, brussels sprouts, kale, broccoli, curly and red cabbage)
These vegetables contain Vitamin C, E and K, carotenoids such as beta carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin, minerals, fibre and folate. All these substance helps in aiding the detoxification process of the body. It also helps to get rid of the substances which cause cancer (carcinogenic substances) that is present in the food and water that we consume. They also contain glucosinolates which have sulphur containing substance in them. It is due to this glucosinolate compound that these vegetables has a bitter taste and pungent smell. These vegetables help in preventing prostrate, colorectal, lung and breast cancer.
Spinach contain glyconutrients as well flavonoids such as apigenin,kaempferol, and carotenoid such as neoxanthin. The glyconutrients present in spinach help in inhibiting the destruction of DNA of the cells. It also helps in inhibiting the growth of cancer cells as well tumour . Including spinach in the diet helps to an extent in preventing colon, ovarian , prostrate and breast cancer.
Beetroot is a rich source of iron, magnesium, potassium, Vitamin A, B6 and C, carbohydrates, folic acid, protein, soluble fibre, anti-oxidant and flavonoid such as betazyane. It also a very good detoxifying vegetable.The iron content in beetroot helps to supply more oxygen and regenerate the red blood cells so that they will be able to supply more oxygen to the cancer cells so that cellular respiration takes place and indirectly kills the cancer cells. The flavanoid betazyane helps to increase the oxygen intake of the cells thus helping in preventing kidney and liver cancer to a certain level.
Asparagus contain certain cancer fighting and cell rejuvanating agents such as indoles, isothiocyanates and sulforaphane. They also contain the antioxidant glutathione which helps in detoxifying the foreign cancer causing substances which enters the body. It also helps in boosting the immune system of the body by increasing the lymphocytes such as B cells and T cells and also the natural killer cells. They also contain polysaccharides which has got anti tumour policies. Saponin is another substance present in asparagus and exhibits anti inflammatory properties. It helps to control or prevent colon, breast and pancreatic cancer to a certain limit.
