Two people were killed when security personnel open fire at protesters, who were demanding compensation, before they were evicted from areas near Assam’s Kaziranga National Park, media reported.

In the eviction process, 190 families are being evicted from Banderdubi area while 160 families are being evicted from Deochurchang.

Amid heavy security, eviction was started early today, however, the situation got worsen when protesters resorted to stone pelting and squatting.

In order to cope with the tense situation, security forces resorted to lathicharge, tear gas shelling and then opened fire to disperse protesters.

In view of a Gauhati High Court order last year, Assam government had decided to carry out eviction in Banderdubi and Deochurchang areas under Kaliabor sub-division of Nagaon district after the residents refused to move out until they were paid adequate compensation.

Including a woman, two people were killed in the firing. The victims were identified as Anjuma Khatun and Fakhruddin. Those injured have been admitted to Jakhalabandha Health Centre.
