Una Dalit flogging: CID chargesheets 34 accused, including 4 cops
The Gujarat Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has filed charge sheet against 34 persons, including four police officials, in the controversial Una Dalit flogging incident. The charge sheet has been submitted nearly two months after four people from the Dalit community were severely beaten and harassed by self-styled cow protectors ‘Gau rakshaks‘.
The CID booked four local policemen, including the former Inspector of Una police station, for negligence and wrong reporting. The report says that the local police officials failed to stop the crime and tried to twist the angle of the case to make victims accused.
The four Dalits had been beaten for more than four hours, and police officials did nothing to stop it. The police control room of Gandhinagar had diverted the call to the Una police station and information was registered in their logbook. These police officers purposefully added a line “cow meat was found” to machinate a reverse plot, according to the CID report.
The cops who got arrested are then Una police station inspector Nirmalsinh Jhala; Sub-inspector ND Pandey; Assistant sub-inspector Kanchanben Parmar, and head constable Kanjibhai Chudasama.
The CID report also confirmed that the cow was killed by an Asiatic lioness, as its hairs were found in the cow carcass. The owner of the cow also testified that his cow was killed by a lioness. But the accused police officials made it as the report of a missing cow incident.
The police officials arrested the flogging victims later, accusing that they have stolen and killed the cow.
The 34 accused have been charged under various Sections of the Indian Penal code, including 307 (attempt to murder), 365 (kidnapping), 397 (robbery), 147 (rioting), 355 (assault to dishonor a person), 342 (wrongful confinement), 324 (causing hurt by weapon) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) .
Three minors have also been charged by the CID in the Juvenile Justice Board at Junagadh.
The charge sheet was filed before the court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate of Una taluka in Gir-Somnath district, AU Jujaru.
