24 killed in stampede in Varanasi

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Minister Akhilesh Yadav announced Rs 2 lakhs each for kin of those killed and Rs 50,000 each for the critically injured

At least 24 people were killed and more than 50 injured in a stampede at Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday.

The incident took place while a gathering of devotees of spiritual leader Jai Gurudev were crossing a narrow bridge. Police said the followers had been on their way to Domri village on the banks of the River Ganga for a two-day event,  The Times of India has reported.

According to reports, over 50,000 people had assembled for the event. Police cited suffocation as the main cause of deaths, Indian Express has reported

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav announced Rs 2 lakhs each for kin of those killed and Rs 50,000 each for the critically injured. Prime Minister Narendra Modi too offered his condolences on the loss of lives on Twitter.

The PM also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakhs to the next of kin of those killed and Rs 50,000 to those seriously injured.
