Amarinder meets Rahul Gandhi , denies discussing Sidhu’s possible entry
Punjab Congress President and former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh met party vice president Rahul Gandhi on Friday to discuss the strategies to be formed in forthcoming assembly elections in the state.
He clarified that former BJP MP Navjyot Singh Sidhu’s possible entry into Congress was not discussed in the meeting. However, Mr. Amarinder added that anyone who was willing to “accept policies and programs of Congress” would be welcomed. Senior Congress leader Asha Kumari also attended the meeting. Sidhu had resigned from BJP last month floating a new party named “Awaaz-e Punjab”.
He has earlier declared that he will not be contesting Punjab elections this time. Amarinder had given a statement of the same nature on that time also. Mr. Sidhu’s wife, Navjot Kaur resigned from BJP later. There were reports that Sidhu could be offered the post of deputy CM of Punjab, which Congress leaders rightly denied. There has been feelrs from the Congress towards Sidhu ever since he had left the BJP. Congressmen had often said that Sidhu’s father was Congress man and hence it is natural that Son would soon follow suit or have ties with Them in the future
Sidhu had resigned his Rajya Sabha MP post last July saying “With the closure of every window leading to Punjab the purpose stands defeated”. The cricketer turned politician was asked to make way for senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley to fight from his Amritsar constituency in 2014 Parliament elections . It is indeed ironical that during the Modi wave in 2014 Jaitley lost to Captain Amarinder Singh in the much talked about contest. The seat that was with the BJP for long under Sidhu went away to the Congress .
Incidentally, both the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party are trying to win over Sikh community where Sidhu enjoys a great support.
