Punjab elections: Congress offers Deputy CM post to Navjot Singh Sidhu
In the latest stint in Punjab politics, former BJP MP Navjot Singh Sidhu has been offered the Deputy Chief Minister chair, if the Congress wins Assembly elections in the state.
Navjot Singh Sidhu was a Rajya Sabha member for the BJP and recently resigned from the party, claiming that the BJP was keeping him away from Punjab elections. Since then, Sidhu has been in talks with opposition parties’ viz. AAP and Congress. And in a huge step, he started his own Punjab-based party Awaaz-e-Punjab.
In his emotional speech at a press conference in July, Sidhu had clarified his step of resigning as Rajya Sabha member of the BJP. “If I have to choose a 100 times between my family, my party, and Punjab,” he said, “I will choose Punjab each time.” Already a popular face in Punjab, his statements on his dedication to stand for Punjab has seen arising number of followers for Sidhu.
Following his resignation, speculation of Sidhu joining the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) started, fueled by the positive and supportive statements coming from AAP’s commander-in-chief Arvind Kejriwal for Sidhu. After a personal meeting, Kejriwal had said it would be a moment of pride for the AAP if he joins them. But soon enough, the AAP played its trick, leaving Sidhu as a victim of false promises. Kejriwal had closed the gates for Sidhu, tweeting that the leader needs more time to think.
Losing out the party that boosted his decision to leave, Sidhu had been rumoured to be in talks with Congress. Soon enough, statements started coming in, where Punjab’s lead campaigner for Congress, Amarinder Singh even voiced that the Awaaz-e-Punjab should be merged with the Congress for the upcoming elections.
In this row, the latest speculation comes from sources close to Sidhu. Media has reported that the Congress has offered Navjot Singh Sidhu the Deputy CM post if the Congress wins the elections. Also, rumored is a high-level post for his wife following the positive outcome of elections for the Congress.
It has been reported that this proposal hasn’t made Amarinder Singh happy, even though it is assumed that the Congress would have to make him the CM candidate for the elections if the deal is finalised with Sidhu.
It is to be remembered that Punjab elections represent the best prospect for the Congress in comparison to states like Uttar Pradesh. Also, opinion polls show a slender lead for the Congress party over the AAP, where the latter can seek consolidation of anti-Akali Sikh vote by roping in Sidhu.
