India beat defending champions Pakistan 3-2 to win their second Asian Hockey Champions Trophy on Sunday in Kuantan, Malaysia.
India dominated the game from the start and took a 2-0 lead in the first half. Rupinder Pal Singh’s penalty corner in the first quarter gave India the lead. Roelant Oltamans’ side doubled their lead with Yousuf Affan’s field goal close to halftime. But Pakistan got one back with a penalty corner of their own from Aleem Bilal.
India went into the title contest at the Kuantan Hockey Stadium without ace custodian PR Sreejesh, who was rested due to pulled hamstring and Akash Chikte took the position in the goal.
Pakistan came out strongly in the second half and equalised through Ali Shan’s field goal. India, however, found their groove in the final quarter of the match, and Thimmaiah struck the winner with a powerful shot from just inside the Pakistan circle. India had last won the trophy in 2011.
