‘MS Dhoni: The Untold Story’ mints Rs 21.30 cr on opening day

Taking a place in 2016 box-office records, Sushant Singh Rajput-starrer MS Dhoni: The Untold Story, that hit theatres across the country on Friday, minted Rs21.30 crore on opening day.

The biopic of India’s cricket team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni made its mark as the second highest opener of 2016. The film takes the second spot after Salman Khan-starrer Sultan, which is a fictional story of sportspersons.

Bollywood trade analyst Taran Adarsh on Saturday took to social networking site Twitter to share the collection.

“#MSDhoniTheUntoldStory takes a THUNDEROUS start on Day 1… Emerges the 2nd HIGHEST OPENER of 2016… Fri ₹ 21.30 cr. India biz. #MSDhoniTheUntoldStory is the BIGGEST OPENER in the biopic genre… Sat and Sun biz should add to a FABULOUS total. India biz,” Adarsh said in a tweet.

Taran Adarsh said the MS Dhoni biopic shared the list of top five highest box office opener for 2016.

“#MSDhoniTheUntoldStory hits it out of the park with a TERRIFIC start… Registers SUPERB opening in morning shows… Expect a BIG Fri total,” Adarsh tweeted earlier.

According to Taran Adarsh, Salman Khan-starrer Sultan minted Rs 36.54 crore. Sushant Singh Rajput-starrer MS Dhoni: The Untold Story earned Rs 21.30 crore. Shahrukh Khan’s Fan raked Rs 19.20 crore. Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh and Abhishek Bachchan-starrer Housefull 3 collected Rs 15.21 crore and Akshay Kumar-starrer Rustom minted Rs 14.11 crore.

MS Dhoni: The Untold Story is a biographical film, based on the life of Indian cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Besides penning dialogues, Neeraj Pandey has written the story and screenplay for the movie in collaboration with Dilip Jha. Arun Pandey has jointly produced the film with Fox Star Studios.

Fox Star Studios distributes the film and produced it jointly with Inspired Entertainment and Arun Pandey, in association with Friday Film Works. The film features Sushant Singh Rajput as Dhoni and Disha Patani, Kiara Advani, and Anupam Kher in supporting roles.
