The Lasyatarangini UAE Chapter, an art collective by dance exponents of Mohiniyattam, will stage its first performance with Mohiniyattam kacheri by renowned dancer Aswathy Srikanth on 11th November at Kerala Social Center ( KSC) in Abu Dhabi.
Aswathy is the daughter of legendary writer and filmmaker MT Vasudevan Nair and eminent dance exponent Kalamandalam Saraswathy.
The performance will mark the launch of the performance series titled “Mohiniyattam Arangu” and the timings would be 7-9 pm, added organisers.
Lasyatarangini was launched at the Kerala Social Center on 20th October, 2016, by the doyen of Kathakali, Padmasri Kalamandalam Gopi Asan.
The ceremonial launch was held on the sidelines of the three-day Kathakali Festival held in Abu Dhabi, in which Asan launched Lasyatarangini logo.
KSC president Padmanabhan announced the inaugural edition of Lasyatarangini UAE Chapter’s activities on the occasion.
A documentary titled “Spatial Rhythms” on the late Kavalam Narayana Panicker, the doyen of experimental drama, poet and director, will be screened at the event.
Lasyatarangini is a collective of Mohiniyattam artistes, scholars, and art enthusiasts seeking to promote and conserve Kerala’s rich art and dance forms.
It originated as an online initiative by like-minded artists dedicated to preserve the unique art and culture of Kerala.
Eminent gurus Kalamandalam Kshemavathy, Bharati Shivaji, Neena Prasad, Vijayalakshmi, Gopika Varma and Smitha Rajan among others are the patrons of group.
The UAE chapter is their first step outside India, added the memebers of the group. “Mohiniyattam provides a very aesthetic experience. Unfortunately, there aren’t enough opportunities in the UAE to watch this graceful dance form. The patrons of Lasyatarangini believe their effort will bridge this gap and bring Mohiniyattam closer to a wider cultural audience,” said Priya M Nair, curator at UAE Chapter.
The event “Mohiniyattam Arangu” is held in association with Kerala Social Centre, UAE Xchange and Etihad Airways.
