New York Web Fest: Indian web series on lesbian love gets most nominations
Set in the 90s in Bengaluru, The Other Love Story, tells the tale of two women falling in love at a time when same-sex relationships were an unforgiving crime in the country
Endless possibilities of new media have brought many into the limelight with their experiments, but Roopa Rao’s web-series on same-sex love seem more promising. Roopa’s courage to compete with popular media with a story that would raise many eyebrows in her country, has now received recognition beyond boarders.
The new Indian web-series, The Other Love Story, of filmmaker Roopa Rao has received six nominations at New York City's Web Fest this time. Set in the 90’s in Bengaluru, The Other Love Story, tells the tale of two women falling in love at a time when same-sex relationships were an ‘unforgiving crime’ in the country.
Roopa was quoted by TOI as saying: "When I made this series, I had no expectations about what I wanted from it or where it would go. I just wanted it to release and share the story, and hoped that people were engaged and entertained with each episode.
“I am thrilled that we have been noticed by a platform like this and that we are competing on a global level for some of the top awards at the festival,” she added.
Known as one of the acclaimed festivals dedicated to new media experiments, NYC Web Fest is scheduled to be held from 10 to 12 November, 2016 at Pit Loft Theater in Manhattan.

Launched in August this year, The Other Love Story steps back from the cliché romantic melodramas and attempts to address pressing topics that need to be discussed. It narrates the romantic relationship between two college students, Aadya and Aachal, in an era before the Internet and mobile phones took over our lives.
“I hope that the series will bring audiences one step closer to accepting same sex relationships. But if not that, just a smile on people’s faces is good enough for us,” Rao told Scroll.in.
Roopa also said the decision to make the series comes as she was frustrated with the fact that in mainstream media lesbianism has become synonymous with porn. Roopa raised the money for the film through crowd funding.
However, The Other Love Story is not the first Indian web series that deals with homosexual love in the country, The BetterIndia states. Launhed in April, a new web-series titled All About Section 377 was received appreciation for its representation of the LGBT community.
