Odisha Police arrest 4 SUM hospital officials for negligence

The arrests were made shortly after Odisha government filed two FIRs alleging negligence in conduct and safety against Sum Hospital

A day after the fire in the city-based SUM Hospital claimed 20 lives and left 100 others injured, Odisha police on Tuesday arrested four official of the hospital.

Medical Superintendent Pusparaj Samantasinghar was among the arrested. Police also arrested ex-Executive Engineer Amulya Kumar Sahu (electrical maintenance), Fire Safety Officer Santosh Das and retired Junior Engineer Malay Kumar Sahu (electrical maintenance).

 They have been charged under sections 304, 308, 285 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code. The arrests were made shortly after Odisha government filed two FIRs alleging negligence in conduct and safety against Sum Hospital.
Chief minister Naveen Pattnaik has ordered an inquiry into the incident headed by a revenue divisional commissioner. As per reports, the tragedy occurred because of suffocation as the smoke spread in most of the wards very quickly after the fire.
