One police officer was killed while another was injured when suspected militants attacked a J&K Police picket in South Kashmir Shopian district on late Friday evening. A civilian was also injured in the gun battle.
According to reports, militants tried to snatch service weapons from a police post guarding a minority community picket in Jamnagri and opened fire.
“During the ensuing confrontation between the cops and militants, two policemen and a Kashmiri Pandit were injured and rushed to district hospital where a constable, later identified as Nazir Ahmad from Kulgam, was declared as brought dead,” the official told Greater Kashmir.
A massive hunt has been launched to nab the militants responsible for the attack. However, there was no report of harm to minorities living in the village. It was not immediately clear if the militants managed to decamp with weapons.
