Claiming a ‘world record’, Reliance Jio on Sunday announced that the network received 16 million subscribers in total during the first month of operations in September.

According to a Reliance Jio Infocomm, the Reliance 4G network, rolled out in September 5, has achieved this growth faster than any other telecom operator or start-up in the world.

Reliance Industries (RIL) chairman Mukesh Ambani said: “We are delighted and humbled by the overwhelming response across India to the Jio Welcome Offer. Jio is built to empower every Indian with the power of data.”

“We are delighted that people have recognised this and are utilising our services to the fullest. We are customer-obsessed and committed to improving every day to exceed expectations of our customers,” he added.

Jio, whose entry sparked off a tariff war in the country, had  1.5 million users on its 4G network during the test phase. The network is currently competing with other services including Bharti Airtel and Vodafone  by providing better users data services.

RIL Chairman earlier said the company, with this new venture, expects to acquire 100 million customers “in the shortest possible time and create a new world record,” claiming a data usage of 250 crore gigabyte per month.

Experts now believe that Jio $G would cross 5 million 4G users by the end of October.

For the first time in India, Jio introduced Aadhaar-based paperless Jio SIM activation across 3,100 cities and towns, enabling the users to activate the SIM within minutes using Aadhaar number

The company said that this process will be extended across the country and fully stabilised for satisfactory on-boarding experience in the next few weeks.
